How to Check Criminal History in Forest County

No single Forest County search produces every police, court, jail, and corrections record. Begin with a full name, any prior name, a date of birth when the official form permits it, and a case or incident number if one is known. Choose the channel by the question before paying for a copy or traveling to Crandon. Wisconsin Circuit Court Access, often called WCCA or CCAP, is the public case and docket route. The Wisconsin Online Record Check System, or WORCS, returns the public portion of the state Crime Information Bureau history. The Forest County Sheriff holds sheriff reports, booking material, and current custody details.

Use exact identifiers and compare the dates across sources. A name-only result can concern someone else. Charges also change as a matter moves from arrest to the district attorney and then to court. Keep the order reference from a WORCS request, the WCCA case number, and the date printed on a county list. Those three keys make later verification much easier.

1. Search WCCA with Forest County selected for a filed CF felony or CM misdemeanor case.
2. Order a WORCS record check when the statewide fingerprint-supported history is the right product.
3. Check the Sheriff's official inmate or warrant document folder for current local information.
4. Match dates, case numbers, charge-level outcomes, and sentences instead of relying on the first label.
5. Ask the proper custodian for a report, offline file, or certified court copy.

Three Forest County Record Systems

WORCS, WCCA, and the county inmate list answer three distinct questions. WORCS compiles fingerprint-supported Wisconsin arrest cycles and later reports from prosecutors, courts, and corrections. WCCA shows filed circuit court cases and docket events. The inmate list shows county custody in a dated document. A person may appear in one system and not another without any of the systems being wrong. Forest County's rural spread also makes phone verification useful when a dated document will not load.

That split matters for an anonymous user, who needs the saved order reference number to retrieve the result later.

Official Wisconsin Background Checks

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Crime Information Bureau manages the Centralized Criminal History database. Any person may request the public adult Wisconsin product through WORCS. The electronic search costs $7. An ordinary paper response through form DJ-LE-250 costs $12, while a mail-only Wisconsin Police Certificate costs $20 and requires fingerprints. These products cover Wisconsin data. They are not a national search, and ordinary public responses generally exclude juvenile material.

A fingerprint-supported cycle can include the arresting agency and arrest charges, prosecutor action, court disposition and sentence, plus corrections notices. Records may still be incomplete when prints were never submitted or a later disposition did not link. For a person's own federal summary, the FBI Identity History Summary is a separate fingerprint process with an $18 federal fee.

The CIB identity challenge uses DJ-LE-247 and an FD-258 fingerprint card. DOJ does not charge for the challenge, although the agency that takes the prints may set its own fee.

Forest County WORCS Request Fields

An ordinary WORCS request does not require an account. Select New Background Request, accept the security notice, enter the requested subject data, pay through the portal's bank redirect, and keep the order reference. Registration is useful for a billing account but is optional for a standard request. CIB support is available weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 608-266-7314.

The account screen is not the record itself. Anonymous requesters can still use the ordinary new-request route.

Types of Criminal Records

Each Forest County record is created at a particular stage. The arresting agency writes the incident narrative. Jail staff create an intake and custody record. The district attorney selects complaint charges. The Clerk of Circuit Court keeps the filed case. CIB compiles qualifying fingerprint-supported cycles, and the Wisconsin Department of Corrections maintains prison and community-supervision data.

• Incident or arrest report: officer actions, alleged conduct, time, place, and the initial charge.
• Booking record: jail intake, booked charge, custody, bond, and release information where public.
• Circuit court file: complaint, docket, hearings, orders, outcome, sentence, and public financial entries.
• CIB history: fingerprint-supported Wisconsin events reported across agencies.
• Corrections or registry record: state custody, supervision, or the statutorily public registry subset.

A report from Crandon Police stays with that department, while a certified judgment comes from the Forest County Clerk. Sending the same broad demand to several offices slows the search and can miss the actual custodian.

Forest County Jail Record Trail

The Forest County Jail is an 80-bed facility completed in 1997. It houses local inmates and may also hold people through an arrangement with Oconto County. Custody location therefore does not prove which county filed the prosecution. The official inmate channel is a dated SharePoint document folder, not a searchable booking database. Open the latest list and use the browser or PDF find tool, then call the jail if release or transfer may have changed the status.

What a Forest County Criminal Record Shows

The available fields depend on the source. A CIB cover page repeats the submitted identifiers and search time. Its identification segment can show a master name and aliases tied to fingerprint submissions. A WCCA file instead centers on the case caption, charges, events, outcome, and sentence. A jail record focuses on intake and custody. Read the source label before interpreting any field.

Correcting Forest County Criminal History

A possible WORCS match is not proof that the record belongs to the searched person. For a mistaken identity match, use DOJ Form DJ-LE-247 with an FD-258 fingerprint card taken by a law-enforcement agency. DOJ charges no challenge fee, though the agency taking prints may charge. DOJ may issue a Wisconsin Unique Personal Identification Number, or WiUPIN, to help separate future name-based searches.

A missing or wrong disposition follows a different route. Obtain a certified judgment or dismissal from the Forest County Clerk, then send the proof through the CIB correction process. If WCCA itself is wrong, contact the filing county's clerk. Expungement is not a tool for correcting false data.

Public Access Laws

Wisconsin Public Records Law favors access, but it does not make every Forest County record public in full. Send a request to the authority that maintains the item and describe the record, date, place, agency, and delivery format. An ordinary request need not state a purpose. The authority may redact protected data, confidential victim or juvenile information, and material whose release would harm an active investigation. A written denial must state reasons and identify the responsible authority.

Forest County Sheriff Record Fees

The Sheriff's form is the local fallback for a sheriff incident report, booking sheet, dispatch item, photo, or body-camera record that is not in an online list. It asks for the incident date, location and type, people involved, exact material sought, delivery choice, and requester contact. The form says the office has up to ten business days, while state law uses the standard “as soon as practicable and without delay.” Treat the form language as local guidance, not a different statute.

Effective May 1, 2026, an accident report is $6. The first ten report pages cost $5, with later pages at $0.15 each plus applicable staff time. Electronic data is $21.01 per hour. Electronic photos are $10 plus staff time, and body-camera video on DVD is $20 plus staff time. Ask for an estimate when formats are mixed. Public-record location costs may be charged under state law only when they reach $50, and prepayment may be required when total fees exceed $5.

Sealed, Expunged & Restricted

Forest County juvenile records follow Wis. Stat. §938.396 rather than ordinary adult access rules. Court documents also protect Social Security, tax-identification, financial-account, driver's-license, state-ID, and passport numbers. Victim and minor information may be withheld. A court can seal material under §801.21 after a motion and judicial findings. Sealing is distinct from Wisconsin sentence expungement.

Under Wis. Stat. §973.015, the court must generally address eligibility at sentencing. The person must have been under 25 at the offense, the maximum term must be six years or less, and statutory exclusions apply. Successful completion is required. There is no broad later petition based only on good conduct.

Most important, court expungement does not automatically erase the fingerprint-supported CIB arrest cycle. Check both WCCA and a personal CIB response. The clerk handles the court record; DOJ handles CIB correction or qualifying removal.

Forest County Warrant Folder

The Sheriff publishes a warrant-list SharePoint folder, but it is a folder of documents rather than a real-time search system. Inspect the newest official list, then call the Sheriff at 715-478-3331 before acting on it. A downloaded copy cannot prove that a warrant is still active or that none exists. WCCA may show a warrant event in the case docket, while the Clerk at 715-478-3323 can help identify the issuing Forest County case.

Arrest warrants authorize custody in a criminal matter. Bench warrants can follow a missed appearance or failure to comply. Search warrants authorize a search and may remain sealed during an investigation. Anyone trying to resolve their own warrant should obtain the case number, court, charge, and current bond instructions directly from the court or Sheriff. No statewide public Wisconsin warrant portal or official Forest County mobile app was verified.

Note: A static warrant list is only a lead for direct verification, never proof of clearance in Forest County today.

Criminal Records by City in Forest County

Forest County has one incorporated city. Crandon is the county seat and had an official January 1, 2025 population estimate of 1,688. Crandon Police creates city incident reports, but county jail staff keep booking and custody material. Filed state criminal cases go to Forest County Circuit Court and WCCA. The city publishes no police report portal or municipal court case search, so phone and in-person requests remain important.

Towns such as Nashville and Laona are not cities and do not receive city pages. This keeps agency labels accurate and avoids sending a request to a government unit that does not exist.

Forest County Corrections Records

Wisconsin runs probation, parole, and extended supervision through the Department of Corrections Division of Community Corrections. Region 6, Unit 613-Crandon serves Forest County, which does not operate its own probation office. Probation is community supervision ordered by the court, while extended supervision is the community part of a Truth-in-Sentencing prison term. Parole mainly concerns older Wisconsin sentences, with the Wisconsin Parole Commission retaining discretionary authority in applicable cases. Search the DOC locator for public custody or supervision status, inspect WCCA for the sentence, and contact the correct DCC unit when the locator does not answer the question. Agent names, presentence reports, confidential conditions, and violation files should not be assumed public.

DCC publishes monthly supervision fees of $20, $40, or $60 based on the gross monthly income of the client and spouse. The department can adjust or exempt a fee, and its policy places active restitution ahead of collection. Early discharge applies to probation rather than every form of supervision. It generally requires at least half of the term served, a reasonable period at minimum or administrative supervision, satisfied court and DOC conditions, paid financial obligations, and no warrants. A person required to register under §301.45 is excluded. These are state rules administered through DCC, not a Forest County clerk program.
